Embracing Adversity Through Yoga

The past couple of weeks have been quite challenging for me, with personal, physical, professional, and ever-increasing global challenges hitting me all at once and in all different directions. I've turned to yoga and my Buddhist practice for guidance during these times. From a yogic perspective, adversity can be a great teacher that helps us grow. Yoga provides us with tools and wisdom to navigate tough times with grace, resilience, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Cultivating Inner Strength

Yoga teaches us that true strength comes from within. Through regular practice, we develop physical, mental, and emotional resilience. The challenges we face in yoga, like holding difficult poses, reflect the challenges we face in life. We build inner strength to face adversities more confidently by meeting them with patience and persistence.

Mindfulness and Presence

Yoga emphasises mindfulness – the practice of being present in the moment. When adversity strikes, my Japa meditation (repeating a mantra) helps me stay focused and reduces anxiety, helping me deal with problems as they arise.

Someday, I will sit outside in the hammock and bathe in the sound of the practising cicada.

Acceptance and Letting Go

Yoga philosophy teaches the importance of acceptance as an acknowledgement of reality. By accepting our circumstances, we can let go of the struggle against what is and focus our energy on constructive actions. I need to catch myself wishing that things would be different.

Breath as a Tool for Calm

Breathing exercises in yoga are a powerful tool. Conscious breathing techniques help reduce stress and bring a sense of calm and clarity.

Self-Reflection and Growth

Adversity often prompts introspection, leading us to question our values and beliefs. This is where I find the more profound strength to take the following actions: I ask myself again what motivates me, check in with my intention, make a new pledge to myself, and serve to the best of my ability.

Introspection is also about looking at the button inside me that the uncomfortable situation is pressing. Why am I suffering? What are the fears and lack of trust that I can now see better?

Community and Support

Yoga fosters a sense of community and connection. During difficult times, the support of my tribe is invaluable and provides a powerful source of comfort and inspiration. My people help me question my intention, reposition my gaze and hold me up. Sometimes, it feels like a warm embrace; other times, it is like icy water on my face.

So next time the heat hits the fan, here are a few tips from me:

- Develop a regular practice

- Focus on your breath

- Stay present

- Seek support

- Reflect and journal

- Be gentle with yourself
